Step 2 of AA: Submitting to a Higher Power

Tuesday, July 22, 2025

“Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.” –  Step 2 of the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous

Many people experience a spiritual awakening in a 12-step program. After admitting your powerlessness in Step 1, Step 2 invites you to turn to something beyond human strength or motivation to find restoration and hope.

While AA leaves the concept of a “higher power” open to interpretation, and many modern 12-step groups are secular, the program’s founders were devoutly Christian, trusted in a loving God, and followed biblical principles.

At Celebrate Hope, we embrace this foundation and encourage clients to explore or rediscover their relationship with God as a vital part of recovery.

What Does It Mean to Submit to a Higher Power?

Submitting to a higher power means acknowledging that you cannot overcome addiction on your own. You must leave pride, self-reliance, and control behind to allow God to begin His healing work in your life.

This step is an invitation to:

  • Let go of the illusion that you can “fix” yourself
  • Trust in God’s ability to restore your mind, body, and spirit
  • Recognize that healing often requires divine guidance and strength

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”  –  Proverbs 3:5-6

Addiction clouds faith. Step 2 offers the first spark of spiritual renewal – an acknowledgment that healing is possible through divine intervention.

Recovery as a Path Back to God

Addiction isolates and separates. It can pull you away from your values, loved ones, and – most painfully – your relationship with God. Many people feel ashamed, unworthy, or broken after struggling with substance use.

Recovery will return you to wholeness. Step 2 is a reminder that God freely offers restoration.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”  –  Psalm 34:18

At Celebrate Hope, we’ve seen firsthand how transformative the 12 steps can be. As clients open their hearts to God’s love and power, they begin to feel peace, purpose, and connection again.

Why Each Step Matters

The 12 Steps are a spiritual progression. Without admitting you are powerless in Step 1, Step 2’s surrender would not be possible. And if you missed Step 2’s faith in a higher power, Step 3’s decision to turn your will over to God wouldn’t be sustainable.

In this way, Step 2 lays the foundation for all the work that follows:

  • Building humility and accountability
  • Restoring sanity and stability
  • Reconnecting with spiritual truth
  • Cultivating trust in something larger than yourself

Whether you are new to faith or returning after years away, the 12 steps are a valuable starting point to reconnect with that higher power and welcome it back into your life.

Celebrating Hope Through Christ-Centered Recovery

While AA invites people to define whatever a higher power means to them, Celebrate Hope affirms that Jesus Christ is the ultimate source of healing and redemption. Our program integrates the 12 Steps with Christian teachings, providing a spiritual path for recovery.

Through faith-based counseling, prayer, Bible study, and Christ-centered community, we help clients:

  • Embrace God’s love
  • Rebuild a personal relationship with Jesus
  • Learn to rely on your faith
